Photography Classes | Summer 2014

Photography is a way of looking at the world. It is an empowering tool for young artists and scientists alike, rewarding curiosity with the treasures hidden in our everyday worlds.

Over the course of 7 weeks your children will learn to use their cameras, capture their unique visions, and build a large portfolio, from which they will choose several images to share in our final gallery exhibition on Saturday, August 9.

Young Photographers

Ages 7-11

Thursdays from 4-5:30, for 7 weeks, followed by a showing of their work on Saturday, August 9

"Young Photographers" is for children who love taking pictures and are ready to dig in! We will explore some basics of photography through weekly, hands-on assignments (to be completed out in the world), designed to engage your children creatively and introduce them to an exciting new way of looking at their world. The course will emphasize photography as a tool for personal exploration and expression, as well as encourage students to consider the elements of an effective photograph, such as lighting, composition and the rule of thirds. Students will build this understanding as they work on creative projects, and they’ll learn to use their specific cameras to achieve their own photographic goals.

This class will emphasize sharing and talking about our art every single week. I will encourage students to embrace and celebrate what happens when they allow others to experience and interpret their photos.

This class requires only a willingness to share, a love of photography and some sort of digital capture device i.e. iPod, point and shoot camera, dslr, etc.

Photography 1

Ages 11-16

Thursdays from 6:00-7:30, for 7 weeks, followed by a showing of their work on Saturday, August 9

"Photography 1" is for young adults who have a DSLR or equivalent camera (cameras that offer manual control of aperture and shutter speed) and want to learn how to use it to achieve creative goals.  We will move beyond 'auto' mode and explore the many different paths our cameras offer to a properly exposed and visually effective image.

While both classes will emphasize the ways in which photography can help us to see what is hidden and visually share what we feel, "Photography 1" will also emphasize the technical basics of photography (exposure, shutter speed, iso, flash, priority modes, etc.) as well as some of the fundamentals of composition and lighting.

We will be sharing and talking about our art every single week. I will encourage students to embrace and celebrate what happens when they allow others to experience and interpret their photos.

Students must have a camera that will allow full manual control of aperture and shutter speed, preferably a digital-SLR camera.
